Weekly talk-therapy sessions taking place over a flexible, but agreed upon length of time to help you resolve or cope with the problems you face. These sessions will help you to build self-awareness, to process your past and current experiences, to learn new skills, and to resolve the obstacles between where you are and where you want to go.

What is it?

Ideal for Someone Who:

  • Wants help in understanding if what they’ve experienced is trauma, and what they can do to feel less affected by it.

  • Is confused about their mental health, is struggling with conflicting feelings, or notices a lot of problems in different areas of life that can feel unmanageable.

  • Needs someone to talk to about what’s going on who will truly listen and be there for them.

  • Has been in therapy before and finds it helpful.

What is the process like?

If you’ve never done therapy before, it can be intimidating to start and maybe you don’t know what to expect. Hopefully this helps.

  • This refers to the offering of free 15 minute phone calls with me, your prospective therapist. To see if it’s a good fit, you’re invited to share what brings you to seek therapy, and what you’re looking to work on. You’ll get to learn about the my therapeutic approach.

  • You’ll complete some forms to provide more information for me so that I know more about your background and where you’re at before getting started.

These forms will also include important notices about confidentiality, cancellation policies, service costs, and any other relevant notices. You can and should bring up any questions or concerns you have.

  • This session will be focused on expectations of therapy, answering additional questions about your history, and discussing your goals for therapy. Maybe you know what you need to work on, or maybe you just know something needs to change and need help figuring out what to do. Either way, we’ll collaboratively set an ideal and realistic therapy timeline - while understanding this is flexible and can be changed as we go depending on your needs.

Most importantly, we’ll be starting to get to know each other. We might not dig too deep into things in this first session, but there will be plenty of time to do that later.

  • We will be getting to know each other in our first few sessions. Feeling comfortable in the relationship with a therapist is important in how effective your therapy will be.

You’ll also spend a lot of time early in therapy receiving what’s called psychoeducation - this basically refers to being taught about things that will help you to better understand yourself and your challenges.

Then, with support, you’ll start to work on trying to think of or handle your problems in new ways that, if effective, will help you overall.

Sometimes it will get uncomfortable - that’s okay. Pushing your comfort zone and taking calculated risks towards your goals is a vulnerable but usually crucial part of the process. Sometimes it feels a bit worse before it feels better. The resilience you’re building is more than worth this price.

  • At various times over the course of your therapy, you’ll be invited to look back on your work so far and see if you’re getting what you want to get out of the work you’re putting in.

Maybe your problems are not quite resolved, and a shift in approach would help you more. Maybe you’ve reached your goals but discovered new problems or goals to target along the way, and you want to focus more on those. Your therapy timeline and the approach can evolve with you.

  • It’s called “terminating” therapy. Don’t skip this step. It means processing the decision to end therapy. Whether you have completed your treatment goals, or have had a change in circumstances that motivates you to stop therapy, you are encouraged to communicate about this and then after that, have at least 1 termination session.

The purpose of a termination session is to reflect on your work in therapy, your takeaways, and obstacles to look out for as you move forward. Having a termination session is helpful in thinking ahead about maintaining the strengths you’ve built in therapy, and it also gives us a chance to honor the work we’ve done together.

In general you can always come back to therapy for support when you need it!
